“Butterfly” Riff

This Chili Pepper riff from the instrumental song “Pretty Little Ditty” off of their 1989 album “Mother’s Milk” would resurface about 10 years later in the popular hit by the band Crazy Town called “Butterfly”. It’s the later version by Crazy Town that is most recognized now, but let’s not forget who really wrote the music.

“Little Wing” as recorded by Stevie Ray Vaughan

Difficulty: IntermediateAdvanced

In the tab below, you will see the complete intro to Little Wing as performed by Stevie Ray Vaughan. All the root notes played on the low E string (6th) are played with the thumb. It’s the only way to free up enough fingers to play the passages on the other strings. If you’ve never played with your thumb, don’t frown upon it. Try to incorporate it into your playing, because it can open up a world of possibilities. We just had to put the picture above up, mainly because that is probably how we all feel trying to figure him out!

One final note: Stevie Ray adds the Am voicing right at the beginning that is not in the original song.Read More »“Little Wing” as recorded by Stevie Ray Vaughan

“Pride And Joy” by Stevie Ray Vaughan

Difficulty: Intermediate

The opening to Pride And Joy is vintage Stevie Ray Vaughan and can be a difficult piece to master, but don’t shy away from it if you find it hard. This makes for great practice.

After the brief intro lead line, the song goes into an shuffle that alternates low notes with the high E, B, and G strings being played open. Stevie Ray hit these high strings with an up stroke. To get that authentic SRV sound (or something close to it ) you’ll want to hit them with an up stroke, too. SRV usually muffled out these strings with his fret hand right after he strummed them, making them a bit muffled and giving them a percussive effect.
