About The Songs
Song Study covers a wide range of great guitar music. Here’s a rundown of some of the songs and why they were chosen.
Taxman by The Beatles
This song ends up being the only shot that George Harrison had at being in the first track position of any of The Beatles’ albums. The opening of the album and this song show a bit of a change in pace as opposed to most of the other Beatles albums. It still manages to send the fast-paced drive and up-tempo that captures the true essence of their artistry. This song study includes both guitar and bass Guitar. Then interplay between them
The Wind Cries Mary by Jimi Hendrix
This classic Jimi Hendrix ballad has some wonderful guitar parts. Technically it’s not a hard song to play, so it’s a great song to learn for the intermediate player. Advanced players will also enjoy learning the song because of the insight it gives us into the creativity of Hendrix.
Redemption Song by Bob Marley
This is a popular ballad from the Reggae master Bob Marley. It’s a simple acoustic guitar part that should be quite easy to learn even for beginners.
Hair Of The Dog by Nazareth
Classic 70’s rock. This song was redone by Guns N’ Roses at one point. It’s fairly easy to learn, too!
Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz
This song has a retro sound. Obviously, Jimi Hendrix was an influence here. It remains one of the biggest Lenny Kravitz hits. It’s got plenty of cool guitar parts to develop your chops and a killer pentatonic minor-based solo.
Life’s Been Good by Joe Walsh)
Joe Walsh is a master at creating great-sounding riffs. This song is living proof! It’s packed full of great guitar lines. It’s not too difficult to learn though, proving once again that a great guitar part doesn’t have to be hard to play to be pleasant to listen to.
Yesterday by The Beatles
This song has beautiful fingerstyle guitar originally performed by Paul McCartney. It was a great learning experience for me and I’d like to share that experience with you. I’ll show you how to play it note-for-note. It’s accessible to players of all levels.
Dee by Randy Rhoads
This Classically influenced song finds rocker Randy Rhoads showing off his fingerstyle guitar chops. It’s not hard to learn and is a great composition to dissect. It’s broken down into 8 detailed lessons that cover every aspect of the song.
Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love by Van Halen
Here’s a fun song to learn. I chose it because it’s one of the easier songs to play by Eddie Van Halen. There are a lot of subtle things that the guitar parts have that you can learn from to help enhance your overall playing.
The Thrill Is Gone by B.B. King
This is what blues is all about! With this song study, you’ll get insight into B.B. King’s intricate blues guitar playing.
Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix
This is a weird song from beginning to end from the disharmonic opening to the off-the-wall guitar solo. The creativity of Hendrix really shines through in this song and that’s why it’s a great one to study.
Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright by Bob Dylan
It has been argued that the guitar on the original version of the song, which features fast fingerstyle, was played by Bruce Langhorne, but it’s been pretty much proven that it was Dylan himself. In any case, it’s a great song to learn. It will really help you develop those finger-picking skills. I’ve broken the song up into 10 lessons, so take your time and enjoy!
The Sky Is Crying by Stevie Ray Vaughan
This song has some incredible blues guitar licks from SRV that are extremely fun to learn (and a little challenging). This is slow blues at its best!
Plus Many More…
I’ve tried to provide a wide range of songs that will help to skyrocket your guitar playing. What better way to improve your playing than by learning from the best players in history!
