Computer Blue by Prince

“Computer Blue” is a track from Prince’s 1984 album Purple Rain, which became one of his most iconic releases. The song, with its blend of funk, rock, and synthesizer-driven sound, is a prime example of Prince’s ability to fuse various genres. The album Purple Rain features many standout tracks, and “Computer Blue” is notable for its distinctive instrumentation and layered production.

The song’s lyrics and music delve into themes of love, isolation, and technology. It’s a reflection on human relationships in the modern age, with some references to the disconnection and coldness of technology, exemplified by the “computer” in the title.

It also incorporates a futuristic, almost dystopian atmosphere with its heavy use of synthesizers, but what stands out in this track, particularly for guitar enthusiasts, are the guitar parts and their pivotal role.

While Prince played many of the instruments himself, Wendy Melvoin (of Wendy & Lisa) provided additional guitar work on “Computer Blue,” contributing to the harmonies and complex textures that make the track stand out.

How To Play It

Part 1

To begin this fun riff, start by playing the “A” string muted twice with your 1st finger. Then press down on the sixth fret, and then on the fourth. To end the first measure, mute the “A” string again and play it twice more.

Part 2

For the second measure, barre your 1st finger on the sixth frets of the “D” and “G” strings. Play those strings once, and then use your 3rd finger to play the eighth fret on the “A” string once. Then play the sixth frets on the two strings again. Next, slide your 1st finger to the eighth fret in the same positioning as above. Play that twice, and then play the sixth frets again once. To finish the second measure, play the eighth frets again once.

3rd and 4th measure

The third measure is identical to the first, so proceed to the fourth measure.

The fourth measure is relative to the second measure. If you can play the second measure, you will have no trouble with the last measure. The only difference here is that you palm-mute right after you play the barred notes on the eighth frets.
