Buddy Holly
Holly first achieved major success with his band, The Crickets, scoring hits with songs like “That’ll Be the Day” and “Peggy Sue.” His distinctive vocal style (often featuring a characteristic hiccup) and his signature horn-rimmed glasses quickly made him an icon of 1950s pop culture. Despite a career that lasted only a few short years, his music profoundly influenced later artists, including the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones.
Tragically, Holly’s promising career was cut short when he died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959—a day later immortalized as “the day the music died” in Don McLean’s song “American Pie.”
