Beginner Exercise 11

We’re moving on to more beginner fingerstyle work, but this exercise and the next one shouldn’t give you much trouble. You’ll be using your thumb (P) and Index (I) to play this exercise.

This is perhaps the most common pattern (P, I, P, I) used in basic classical fingerstyle guitar. You will hear it often called “PIPI” for short. This pattern allows for rapid note-striking in brisk passages when only one or two strings are played in unison, such as the 2nd and 4th measures below.
