Where to find this song - Brushfire Fairy Tales track # 8
Release Date - Feb 6, 2001
Before Jack Johnson perfected his folk/surf music style, he was
a champion surfer on the professional route with a sponsorship
with Quiksilver. It was a life that was second nature for this
Hawaiian native, for he began chasing waves as a toddler, and by
the time he was 17, he was an outstanding athlete on the Pipeline.
However, Johnson was also testing his other creative outlets — one
being film and the other being music. It was during his college
years as a film student at University of California at Santa Barbara
when Johnson began writing songs. This song, if you have heard
it, is about a child who doesn't understand why news reporters
show such disconcern when reporting bad news on the television.
How many times have we got tired of seeing bad news? Imagine what
a child would think about it, especially when he or she didn't
understand.
Intro Riff
For the intro riff, all you will be playing in the first four
measures is an A chord. You may already know how to play this,
but for reference purpose lets go over this again. Play the A chord
by placing your 1st finger on the second fret on the
"B" string. Place your 2nd finger on the second fret on the "D" string,
and your 3rd finger on the second fret on the "G" string. Follow the
pattern accordingly and you will have it. Notice that the open notes on the "A" string
are very important for timing, and that those notes precede the actual chord.
Verse
For the verse, you will be playing the same thing from the intro
on the first two measures. Allow the notes to ring this time as
well. For the last two measures, you will be playing the same thing
both times. Play this by placing your 1st finger on the second
fret on the "A" string. Place your 3rd and 4th fingers
on the "D" string and the "G" string on the
fourth frets. Last, place your 2nd finger on the third fret on
the "B" string. That is a Bm chord. Enjoy!
