In 1973, after recovering from a heroin addiction, Johnny Winter released the album “Still Alive And Well”.
The first track is a fiery version of the B.B. King song called “Rock Me Baby”. It’s a prime example of why you’ll find Winter ranked #63 in Rolling Stones magazine’s top 100 Greatest Guitarists.

“Rock Me Baby” is an example of blues rock at its best. It’s a great combination of high energy and peak guitar skills. Winter, after all, is a guy who jammed with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Muddy Waters. It’s no wonder he could blaze up the fretboard.

It’s a standard three-chord song and most of the soloing are done with the Am pentatonic, but Johnny doesn’t rest for a moment. He fills up the song’s three minutes with enough hot licks to last a lifetime. On a meter of difficulty measured from 1 (easiest) to 10 (hardest), I’d give “Rock Me Baby” a solid 8, so be sure to pack a lunch.
