G Note Roadmap

In this lesson, we’ll locate our G notes on each string. That’s 6 G notes total and 3 of them are in the open G chord. Do you know which ones they are?

Even if you were guessing you’d have a 50/50 chance of getting it right. It would help if YOU didn’t have to guess. Going off what you’ve learned you should be able to locate them outright.

We know that the lowest note is the root and therefore will be G (since it’s a G chord). So, that’s the 3rd fret low E and it will be the same for the high E string. Lastly, we know that there
is an open G string (3rd string).

There’s also a G note on the 10th fret of the A string, 5th fret of the D string, and the 8th fret of the B string.

So, we end up with:
•E String – 3rd Fret
•A String – 10th Fret
•D String – 5th Fret
•G String – Open
•B String – 8th Fret
•High E – 3rd Fret

Again, it’s one thing to memorize it, but it’s much better to spend time finding them with your guitar in hand. If you can only remember where the G notes on the E strings (plus, open G) you can use that knowledge and, some of the tricks we’ve talked about, to find more.

Once you think you’ve got it down practice playing each G note on each string in quick succession. It’s a really helpful exercise to perform and may help cement the locations of these notes in your mind.
